Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th in 1972. She was raised by her grandmother as a single child. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was learning about secondary education. She was hoping to be an English teacher in high school. The dream, however ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of study and became a teachers' aide. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. Through a Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Afterwards she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was performers on the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
